Rapée: Charmaine! for voice and piano
Born in Budapest, Ernö Rapée (actually Rappaport) was inspired by sophisticated light music at an early age. In the USA, he worked as a cinema musician in the silent film era. "Charmaine!" was also written as an instrumental waltz for a silent film score in 1923. Lew Pollack provided lyrics shortly afterwards. The song quickly became a hit. With the orchestral version by Mantovani, it became an evergreen. Today, most people know it as the introductory music to the legendary german TV sketch ‘Dinner for One’.
