Walter Niemann was born into a highly musical North German family. He received musical training at an early age and began studying at the Leipzig Conservatory in 1898 through Engelbert Humperdinck, studying with Carl Reinecke and Hugo Riemann, among others. Niemann remained in Leipzig and became active as a music writer and critic. His reviews were feared and drove him into an ugly legal dispute with Max Reger, among others. From 1924, Niemann worked primarily as a composer. He wrote in an impressionistic tonal language that was often based on descriptions of nature. The style of his works, composed almost exclusively for piano, earned him the nickname of the "German Debussy".
