Works and editions by Gigout, Eugène (1844-1925)

Gigout, Eugène (1844-1925)

Alongside César Franck, Louis Vierne and Charles Marie Widor, Eugène Gigout is the fourth great romantic of French organ music. He was born in Nancy. There he received his first training in the renowned boys' choir of the cathedral. Later he studied in Paris with Camille Saint-Saëns, among others. After graduating, he remained as a teacher at the Ecole Niermeyer, where he trained composers such as Fauré, Boëllmann and Roussel. He was considered an influential but also paternal and very benevolent professor.

As a composer, Gigout left behind many works for organ and harmonium. Remarkable here is the range from simpler works for amateur organists to the large and virtuoso concert works. They all share a consistent quality of form, language and content that has never lost its value.
