Robert Fuchs was born into a musical Styrian family in 1847. His older brother was a court conductor. Robert first became a teacher, but then studied organ and composition in Vienna. He worked as an organist and quickly became known as a composer in many genres. As a professor of music theory, he taught Mahler, Korngold, Strauss, Sibelius, Schreker and Zemlinsky, among others.
