Pièces et editions de Mortelmans, Lodewijk (1868-1952)

Lodewijk (Ludwig) Mortelmans was born in Antwerp as the son of a printer; his eldest brother was the painter Frans Mortelmans. Lodewijk studied music early on, among others with Peter Benoit, and quickly became successful: in 1893 he received the Prix de Rome. Mortelmans was considered the leading Flemish composer of his generation. He had influence as a professor at the Royal Conservatoire and was extraordinarily successful as a composer of songs, piano pieces and orchestral works. Many of his works are still part of the standard Flemish repertoire today.
