Léonce de Saint-Martin was born in Albi in south-west France in 1886. He became a substitute organist in the cathedral there at the age of 14. He initially trained as a lawyer and later studied organ and composition in Paris. His great talent was also recognised there; he soon became Louis Vierne's protégé and one of his substitutes at Notre Dame. When Vierne died, Saint-Martin took over his position - many said that he obtained it against Vierne's will. Although Saint-Martin retained the post until his death in 1954, he had been persona non grata in Paris' church music scene ever since.
