Works and editions by Prokofiev, Sergej (1891-1953)

Prokofiev, Sergej (1891-1953)

Sergei Prokofiev, born in 1891 in Sonzowka (today Ukraine), received his first piano lessons at the age of four and became a piano student in St. Petersburg at 13. In the turmoil of the October Revolution, Prokofiev moved to the USA, where he had little success. He moved to Paris, also lived briefly in Bavaria, and returned to Stalin's Russia in 1936 - by then he already had a legendary reputation in the West as a virtuoso and composer. In Russia he wrote many of his best-known works, including "Peter and the Wolf", but also many pieces with political connotations. Prokofiev is considered a West-East composer with roots in both spheres and one of the most original tone creators of the post-Romantic era. He died in 1953 on the same day as Stalin, as a result of a fall.
